Private pilot cost from these rates
Computed Not a quote from Mesquite Aviation. Computed from the school’s posted hourly rates: aircraft hours × its lowest Cessna 172 or Piper PA-28 rate, plus hours with an instructor × its lowest flight instructor rate. FAA minimum = 40 aircraft hours (30 with an instructor, 10 solo) under 14 CFR 61.109. Typical = 65 aircraft hours (50 with an instructor, 15 solo). Not included: ground instruction, books, medical exam, FAA knowledge test, examiner fee for the checkride, headset and renter’s insurance.
| Scenario | Aircraft | Instructor | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| FAA minimum (40 hours) | 40 hr × $165 = $6,600 | 30 hr × $65 = $1,950 | $8,550 |
| Typical (65 hours) | 65 hr × $165 = $10,725 | 50 hr × $65 = $3,250 | $13,975 |
The school doesn’t say whether this rate includes fuel. If it is dry, fuel is extra and the totals are low.
